of age in politics in the clinton administration and watched pelosi and harry reid vote for tax increases under bill clinton that are the taxes we would go back to if we do nothing. at the same time, i watched nancy pelosi lead the charge against the bush tax cuts that ultimately now they want to keep 98% of. the truth is if we go over the cliff on a tax basis, we're only going back to the clinton era taxes. if we don't change spending, we're going to stay over the cliff. even if we go back to the clinton tax rates, the clinton tax rates, which is what the cliff is described as, you still have nearly half a trillion dollars a year, $5 trillion over ten years worth of deficit. that's because while we grew the -- under bush the taxes revenue went up 25%, and spending went up 100% in the last 12 years. if you put back the revenue from the higher taxes, you still have a deficit. that's what we're trying to change. >> we kind of are where we are, and no one is talking about spending cuts. they're talking about keeps taxes low, which everybody agrees. let me ask a specific question fi

. that is a concern that's expressed. again, you go back, though, through history. president clinton started the cops program where you have resource officers who are armed in the schools as a result of that. there is partial funding, but it's very limited and cut back and insufficient, obviously. it's going to take over $2 billion if you put a federal funded program for an armed person at every school. i think there's voluntary programs to look at if you have trained people, and we want to set up a model training for this. it should be an option that the local school board finally makes the decision. i can understand skepticism, but i think that school safety is the debate. i think it is terrific that the nra is willing to fund experts and st. louolutions free of cos the schools to hopefully create a voluntary program. >> it's more than skepticism. i want to read you two reactions to what the nra had to say. the first from mayor michael bloomberg who said they, meaning the nra, offered a paranoid vision of a more dangerous and violent america where everyone is armed and no place is

what bill clinton did. he needs to do what president reagan did. president reagan was willing to sit down with the democratic speaker of the house and work on real common sense solutions. >> he met with speaker baner. >> he sat down once. >> couldn't speaker boehner get his house republicans to go along with his plan b. >> look at plan b. plan b was a plan that was advocated by nancy pelosi, was advocated by chuck schumer less than two years ago. they said that what we should do is raise taxes on people that make a million dollars or above. there were only 50 house republicans who said they were not going to vote for plan b. you couldn't even get 50 house democrats to vote for something like that, to send somethi to the senate and then the senate could maybe raise taxes on people that make less than that. so don't blame the republicans when it's the democrats that are unwilling to work on anything. when the president said that he wanted to look at chain cpi -- >> that's the -- >> that's a nonstarter. >> changing the way social security payments are attached to the cost of living. >>
